STATEMENT BY DAVID DUNN:IN RESPONSE TO TEXAS CHARTER SCHOOL GROWTH
TCSA is thrilled to start off the 2009-2010 school year with good news. According to new enrollment data compiled by the National Alliance for Public Charter School, Texas added 55 additional campuses, 9 new schools, and more than 14,000 new students - making us a leader in charter school growth among all other states. Texas now ranks second in terms of growth rate, just behind California. The new data confirms what we already knew, the demand and the market for high-quality, effective charter schools is rising in our state. As usual, Texas is a leader in the national movement for education reform. Texas currently operates one of the largest charter school programs in the country - 215 charters are operating 460 campuses that serve a total of over 102,000 students.
Nationally this year, there are over 400 new public charter schools and more than 170,000 new students attending these public charter schools. The addition of these new charter schools means there is now 4,900 public charter schools enrolling over 1.5 million students across the country.
The Texas Charter Schools Association (TCSA) is the leading membership organization of effective charter schools of all types, representing more than 100,000 students in 390 charter schools across Texas.
