KIPP Schools awarded Broad Prize for Public Charter Schools

First KIPP School started in Houston, Texas 20 years ago

(Austin, Tex.) -- Today, the Broad Prize for Public Charter Schools was awarded to KIPP Schools during the second day of the National Charter Schools annual conference. The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation awards this prize to honor the public charter school network that has demonstrated the most outstanding overall student performance and has helped close achievement gaps among low-income and minority students. KIPP Schools will be sharing the prize money with their fellow finalists to put toward scholarships for students to further their mission of Students To and Through College.

"We are proud of the latest Broad Prize for charters winner: KIPP Schools, which started in Texas 20 years ago," said David Dunn, executive director of the Texas Charter Schools Association. "KIPP Schools believes in every child succeeding and achieving, and this prize highlights their long history and hard work in the charter school landscape to close the achievement gaps among low-income and minority students."

Out of the three years of Broad charter prizes, two have been Texas Charter Schools Association members, YES Prep Public Schools (Started in Houston) and KIPP Schools (started in Houston), with a third finalist, IDEA Public Schools (started in the Rio Grande Valley).

Public charter schools are tuition-free, open-enrollment public schools that have the flexibility to adapt to the educational needs of individual students while still held to state academic and financial accountability standards. In total, there are more than 178,000 students in over 550 open-enrollment charter campuses (2013 AskTED) with more than 101,000 students on waiting lists across Texas (2012 survey). Charter students represent close to 4% of the public school population in Texas. The Texas Charter Schools Association is the statewide Association representing open-enrollment charter schools in every part of our great state. Visit www.txcharterschools.org for more info.
