Celebrates 2013 Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Award for Public Charter Teacher

(Round Rock, Texas) — U.S. Representative John Carter (TX-31) toured and visited with students at Meridian Charter School in his district today. Cong. Carter and Dr. Michael Gillette, executive director of Humanities Texas, presented Meridian English teacher, Martha McFarland, with the 2013 Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Award. SBOE Member Tom Maynard (District 10) and TCSA executive director David Dunn joined them to celebrate this tremendous recognition.

“I greatly enjoyed my visit to Meridian Charter School today, and I am proud that we have amazing educators in District 31 who are truly committed to ensuring our children succeed,” said U.S. Congressman John Carter. “Mrs. MacFarland is one of those shining stars, and her dedication to her students is evident. I congratulate Mrs. MacFarland on the achievement of receiving the 2013 Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Award.”

Humanities Texas:
The state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, Humanities Texas develops and supports programs across the state, including teacher institutes, lectures, oral history projects, museum exhibitions and documentary films.

Meridian Charter School:
In August 2011, Meridian opened with grades K-8 and 680 students. This August, Meridian began its third year with the addition of grade 10, approximately 770 students in K-6 and 225 in 7-9 with a total of just under 1000 students. Meridian School will grow a grade per year until it is K-12 with a total of 1330 students. Meridian School provides an invigorating educational environment that develops responsible citizens who can artfully navigate the complex world and each student will engage in diverse investigations, disciplined inquiry, and integrated service learning to cultivate intercultural awareness, creativity and mental acuity.
